SEO

When a word speaks a thousand pictures…

Website content (also known as copy, or text) is very important to search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. They’re constantly in competition to return the most relevant websites on searches. The most important technique they use is to crawl over the content on a site, searching for keywords relevant to the search term used.

So, arguably, the words you use on your website are more critical than those you use in any other media. They’re more important than the graphic design or images on your site.

It’s not just the words you use. Where you use them within the copy is also important in attracting the attention of search engines. These techniques are known as search engine optimisation, or SEO.

Write for your audience

It’s a fine balance, however, and you must remember that once your site has been found by the search engine, it must be attractive and compelling to the reader. If it isn’t, it has all been pointless.

For example, the following is copy is optimised for the term ‘website content’:

Website content must be on-brand
Website content should be on-message
Website content needs to be compelling
Website content benefits from search engine optimisation
…and so on

It doesn’t make for a very good read, does it?! You also have to be careful not to get yourself blacklisted by search engines by writing in a way in which they believe you’re trying to fool them.

Another technique you can use is to attach articles to your website – articles which are rich in keywords and which you can use on your and other sites to attract readership and help boost your brand image. Marketing Flex can help with these, too.
